OUR GUIDED FLY FISHING TRIPS
FLOAT TRIPS
1 or 2 anglers per boat
A drift boat is by far the best way to fish large western rivers, like the Rogue and Umpqua(s). By drifting with the best fly fishing guides in southern Oregon here at Rogue Valley Anglers, our anglers get to see more of our beautiful scenery, fewer people, and get way more opportunities to catch fish! Floating is also ideal for anglers who are newer at fly fishing or would prefer not to wade as much. The Full day float is by far our most popular trip, allowing for maximum fishing time and miles of river to cover.
We guide the Rogue River all year, as there are always steelhead in different parts of the river. We also guide for trout during our legendary salmonfly hatch starting May 22nd (trout season opener) through the end of June. These are some of our favorite trips of the year, as we throw big dry flies all day to gorging trout (and the occasional steelhead)!
In July we turn our attention to the largest summer steelhead run left in the Pacific Northwest here on the Rogue, and we feel lucky this is our home waters as we wouldn’t want to be fishing anywhere else for summer steelhead! Our peak season for summer steelhead on the Rogue is July through Christmas, with mid September through Thanksgiving generally being the best combo of incredible fishing and nice weather. During the heat of the summer (July thru Mid-September) we don’t do full day trips, as it’s 98+ degrees every day and the fishing is only good in the morning. We normally do 3/4 day trips during this time, as the fishing and weather ARE really good in the early morning. We meet up at first light (5-6 AM depending on the month), and fish hard until 11 or 11:30 then call it a day before the fishing shuts down as the weather gets too hot. We still cover 8-9 miles of river on the 3/4 day floats like we would on a full day, we just don’t stop for lunch.
We guide winter steelhead on the Rogue starting in late January and ending in mid April. We do most of our early trips down below Grants Pass, and then start fishing the upper Rogue closer to Medford in March and April. Winter steelhead are bigger, but can be harder to catch as this is our rainy season and the river levels fluctuate greatly.
We also guide the Umpqua system for giant winter steelhead starting in December and going through early April. In December we only guide the mainstem Umpqua when conditions are right and require people to book multiple guided days. At some point in January we start guiding closer to Roseburg on the mainstem Umpqua, as well as the South and North Umpqua rivers. As we get into late February and March we normally only guide on the North Umpqua, as it’s peak season there and the best place in Oregon to hook that true steelhead of a lifetime!
