This is my go to hook for tying classic summer steelhead flies (Green Butt Skunk etc), as you lose way less fish on the down eye hooks. Great replacement for the old down eye Mustad we all used to love. I still tie a turle loop like I do on the up eye hooks, but the down eye just pins steelhead better than the up eye hooks. I won’t rant on why the up eye hooks became popular here, but it’s silly in my book that the old steelheaders decided they should do things like the atlantic salmon guys (who have good reason to use the up eye hooks that don’t apply to steelhead).
