Jason Hartwick’s Flashtail Tube series is tied in a style to provide a lot of flash and a moderate size profile. A brass cone is used to hold the marabou in a position so the profile will not collapse.

Another great fly for winter steelhead, as well as good for summer steelhead during the day when we pull out our skagit rod with T-11. On the middle and upper Rogue when steelhead are 80+ miles from the ocean we generally have more confidence in darker colors (black/blue) so the first person will go through a run fishing that and the second person will follow up with a brighter fly (pink/purple). When we fish coastal rivers closer to the ocean we switch that up and normally the first person will go through with the brighter fly (as that’s what we have the most confidence in) with the second person fishing the darker fly.
